The business of growing up

It is part of the business of growing up to listen to the fearful discords which real life grinds out and to include them among the images of reality. Truth and reality are assuredly no music of the spheres--they are the beauty and terror of Nature herself. C. G. Jung CW 18 - par 13

Jung was so right! Another aspect that precludes one from being open to listening (giving) and engage in conversation with the "other" does indeed seem to point to emotional immaturity. I think that it was Robert Bly who wrote a book about "Sibling Society" implying that no one is really "grown up". I tend to completely agree. I think that parenting that does not require children and young adults to deal with negativity and conflict is precisely what perpetuates this tendency to be child-like in that which would otherwise yield an adult response.
